A Deep Dive Into Thecus NAS Software @ tweaktown.com
Posted by newsbot on March 05th 2010
Testing NAS servers is a complicated and time consuming task. For the most part modern NAS products are computers in their own right with some using Intel Core2 Duo processors with 4GB of RAM. When writing a NAS review it is easy to focus on the hardware and capabilities, but often the software, applications and setup functionality take a back seat even though these functions are in many cases just as important as the hardware used.To help ease the strain on both the reader and the writer, today we are going to cover the latest firmware / software release from Thecus. In a couple of days we will also publish a similar article covering the QNAP firmware / software since these are the two companies that send us a sample every other month and also have such extensive software. We plan to keep these available as living documents with updates published throughout the coming years.

Intel D510MO Mini-ITX Motherboard @ bigbruin.com
Posted by newsbot on March 05th 2010
The most appealing thing about the Intel D510MO Mini-ITX motherboard with 1.66GHz Intel Atom dual core processor was that it could be used as the core of a completely silent system. Since the board is passively cooled, you can pick other passively cooled or solid state components for a build that generates absolutely zero noise.

NAS File System Tests by Thecus Explored @ tweaktown.com
Posted by newsbot on March 04th 2010
A couple of weeks ago my curiosity turned a light working weekend into a full on charge in exploring the ins and outs of NAS server file systems. While testing the Crucial RealSSD C300, we moved away from the ASUS P6T7 WS SuperComputer motherboard that was used to test storage released products and started using the GIGABYTE X58A-UD7. This left me with a free system at a key time to start taking a deep dive into file systems on NAS servers. At first it started out as a harmless test with a single drive on a different file system to see what would happen to performance. Forty-eight hours later has evolved into a nonstop Bawls fueled obsession to see how much improvement we could find just by setting our NAS up differently.

Thermaltake Element V Full Tower Chassis @ tweaktown.com
Posted by newsbot on March 04th 2010
Thermaltake is allowing me to have a look at another in the Element series of chassis’. If you remember from my last visit with one of the Element chassis’, the Element T, I was impressed with their work. That was a budget conscious chassis design, but still offered quite a bit of bang for the buck in the mid tower segment of the market. This time around we get to look at a full tower from the Element line that offers a bunch more room, a ton of features and much better airflow built in. Features include multi-colored LED lighting, a three fan controller built in and a somewhat tool-less interior just to name a few, but a key feature on this chassis we are about to look at is security.
