For some, the router is the one and only piece you will need for a home network. It will allow you to share your network connection and provide a little security by using NAT, Network Address Translation. NAT is a network standard that allows a Local Area Network (LAN) to use one set of IP addresses for internal traffic while allowing a second set of IPs or IP to be used as the external or Public IP.
